Manufacturing Process of Spiral Power Springs

Let’s talk about the manufacturing process of spiral power springs.

(1) When developing new‑product projects, the design and production of special‑shaped springs require thorough discussion among in‑house engineers and iteration of multiple solution combinations to achieve final design validation

For instance, special‑shaped springs for home rowing fitness equipment can deliver expected performance only when non‑contact spiral power springs with outer‑end hinges are adopted as the main resistance element.

(2) Special springs are featured by complex spatial angles and irregular bends. Spiral power springs belong to the family of special‑shaped springs. A spiral power spring is formed by winding thin constant‑cross‑section material into a planar spiral profile.

Compared with other spring types, spiral power springs are relatively easy to manufacture with low stiffness, and they generally operate under static‑load conditions. Thanks to a large number of coils and large deflection angle, they can store substantial energy within compact dimensions.

Material cross‑sections can be either rectangular steel strip or round steel wire. According to whether adjacent coils touch each other, spiral power springs are divided into two types: non‑contact type and contact type.

(3) To produce spiral power springs, dedicated Archimedean‑spiral moulds shall be designed in advance, together with well‑defined winding and heat‑treatment procedures.

Prior to winding, purchased rectangular steel strips need to undergo annealing treatment. Three winding methods are available: manual winding, lathe winding and special‑tool‑fixture winding.

After winding, the spring shall not be removed from the mould immediately. The spring‑mould assembly is placed into a heating furnace. Once quenching temperature is reached, take out the whole assembly and immerse it in suitable quenching oil for quenching. Afterwards, heat the assembly up to tempering temperature and hold for required soaking time before removal.

Each coil of the finished spiral power spring shall show smooth and uniform transition without dents or bulges. The surface shall be smooth, and sharp edges on side faces shall be chamfered or rounded. Surface oxidation treatment or other anti...
